Business Structure – Lot’s Or Not ?

Just last Friday evening Ciaran & I had a few drinks with our old account manager from seek .com, it was a great time up at their plush little offices right above ANZAC Square in the Brisbane CBD, they all played top hosts to Ciaran and myself, along with a few other recruiters, only an intimate gathering were invited.

During the night, and as we have encountered all year since the birth of JDP & JP, people of various relations to us often ask about the business, as they’re genuinely interested in how things are going, of course, though the number one piece of advice we’re receiving from people, qualified or unqualified to give it, is don’t grow too quick & don’t live a luxurious lifestyle too soon – very meaningful, good & right advice. The second most commonly questioned aspect to how we’re running the business is; what is your structure?

Now this is in an interesting question or topic, because I believe there’s probably one million successful “structures” one could incorporate into a business and there’s probably one million unsuccessful “structures” one could incorporate into the business.

What is our structure – well we really don’t have one / still working it out. The reason I’m not big on a structured environment is this; before I got into 360 recruitment consulting (Early 2011), right before Ciaran hired me at BK I really wanted to join Marks Sattin, why – because I liked the “structure” I was told that I’d be getting, it made me feel all warm and fuzzy, it would be comfortable and it would have provided a nice level of certainty for me. However I didn’t end up getting that job. I accepted and went to work with Ciaran, with no recruitment user manual, no “structure”, just practical get in and get it done type “structure” if you can call it that. Ciaran showed me the ropes of 360 recruitment for about 3 weeks at BK until Jessy was hired and then I was left alone, with Mr Fairbanks constantly asking me if I’d made a placement yet, I soon did and then so on.

The main reason for this short blog is to raise conversation around business structure – I mean, do we think it’s right to have lots, not a lot, none at all – you tell me? I’m open to finding out what the most popular way to “structure” a business is? #LoveLearning

Last night was good, around 220 new and enthusiastic digital peeps turned out and turned up, to celebrate and build new partnerships with one another! All winners!

A huge thank you to each and everyone of you for having a good time and making the night a huge success, pat yourself on the back right now. April 2014 will be the next event, the centre piece will be THE RED CARPET, stay tuned!!

A little now to the business end of why last night was. Just Digital People is the company that Ciaran and myself run with an awesome crew of 7, with our 8th crew member starting Tuesday 8th of October. So, Yes we’re a recruitment company, Yes we want to make money, Yes, we want to give our customers THE BEST SERVICE EXPERIENCE ever, of course.. HOWEVER a lot of the great #BiBsBNE attendees last night were interested in my vision, they wanted to know where we want to take the business? At JDP we don’t want to take over the world – we want to be the best, biggest, smallest digital recruitment company in the world. We want to keep flying ahead, creating great opportunities for good people, in the market places we choose to start-up in… AND we want other bigger clunkier, recruitment companies to keep following what we’re doing! We want to give you high touch, not high tech. What that means is, we’re using the THANK YOU ECONOMY to deliver our business experience AND not using fancy tech platforms to deliver our work touch & hustle. Our crew are sending more emails, more tweets, more DM’s, doing more face to face catch ups, more beers and or coffees, more one to one heart to heart skype chats, more texts, more phone calls – over all we’re spending more time with you, giving you much more personal one to one connection! NONE of this automated stuff.

I love competition. If another recruitment company can piece together an event like Brisbane Interactive Beers last night, then they take the mantle of been the “BEST” DIGITAL recruitment company in Brisbane. BiBs, I want to do this in; Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Toronto, New York… (if you’re a recruiter reading this, I might want to do this with you).

To me the criteria for the BEST DIGITAL RECRUITMENT COMPANY IN BRISBANE or anywhere on Gods green earth, is about how much value you add to the world you live in. For us, that’s Brisbane, and our value add, is to create a minimum of 50 good linkedIN connections today AND from that, at least 20 new business transactions from those connections, before the next Red Carpet experience in April 2014.

In conclusion – I hope all of you who attended last night, not only had a good time but, met someone you can keep chatting with past, last night – meaningful relationships is what it’s all about!

BIBS. Brisbane Interactive Beers. Oct 3rd. Regatta. Invite ONLY.

So if you’re a social follower of mine or JDP’s you’ve probably heard about this bibs event that’s coming up? Chances are you probably went to the last one that we held on April 12 at Little Panda in the valley… those that attended that event, diary permitting, will definitely be attending this one on Thursday, October 3rd at the Regatta – BECAUSE the last BIBS rocked. SO many people took away, so much value of all different kinds!

Why is this event different? Well as far as I can think, there are not too many types of people in the Brisbane Digital Industry who have the job of talking with and connecting with, as many “good” companies and “good” people as humanly possible to create a profitable business. That’s what the team and I do here at JDP. So as a result of this, we’ve decided that 2 or 3 times a year we’ll gather all those people who like us, and put on a fun and vibrant, get together event, where everyone; freelancers, small businesses, larger agencies and even large eCommerce corporates of Brisbane, can all come and hang out and get to know one another (get a bit drunk & be a bit silly), and then go from there and collaborate as they wish! (<<SINGLE BEST PART).

My passion is connecting good people with good people (and making a little money). I’ve done it from grade 8, in the year 2001, when Mitchell wanted a job at McDonalds – I already worked there – so I hooked him up to work Front Counter and he loved it, I’m pretty sure he still works there – longevity is awesome 🙂
